Strangers Made My Day

I took a day trip by myself to Downtown LA, and I ended up having a GREAT day! I needed this time alone, I've just been a little too hard on myself lately. But a few strangers totally made my day today. So let me tell you about my adventure:

So I took public transportation in the center of the jewelery district (creepy & depressing place), and it was pretty uncomfortable let me tell you that. I was walking to Hill/7th to take Line 20, and some guy a half block away screams to these people eating "YOU'RE GOING TO HELL". Fun. But I did get to see some cool sights from riding the bus.

What an inspiration, I found a beautiful mural of Jaime Escalante and the guy who played him in Stand and Deliver.

I like how Downtown has old and modern architecture. Here is a Korean Church with an ornate design on it's front door.

Success! I finally got to the La Brea Tar Pits :]

Bones of a Mammoth native to California. Never realized how big a lot of these ice age animals were. Did you know we had lions in California!? AMAZING.

An installation of Dire Fox skulls. This was just only 1 panel of the 3 they had displayed on the wall. Very artsy.

I went to the LACMA gift shop and found a basket of Georgia O'keeffe's. Friggan cute huh!? But a little creepy... No wonder it was on the floor, hiding beneath a shelf.

After wards, I visited a little Folk Art museum across the street. They had a cool exhibition of Tarot cards and what they symbolized. Took the bus to the Red line on Wilshire/Vermont, bought two tamales and sat on a bench to eat. Then this middle aged man says hi to me and I say hi back. He comes over and gets down on one knee and gives me a flower that he made. He hurt his knee, so I had to help him up. LOL.

Then I took the Red line back, visited Olvera Street and bought these babies! They are hand etched, hammered with gold foil, and are from Spain. BTW, SAVE OLVERA STREET, sign this petition:

Once I was done window shopping, I walked home, and this guy was like, "Hey! Hey! Can you do me a favor?" "Depends..." "Do me a favor and stay beautiful! You look like an Angel walking while holding that flower" LMAO!

So yep, true story...

Contradicting Feelings

There was once a time when "time" treated this man pleasantly. When "time" was nice to him, he had eyes as big as moons, an angular jaw that demanded authority, a body that never bailed on him, and thick black hair that cascaded his head like rice paddies ready to be harvest. He came to the Gold Mountain in hopes of luck and prosperity. Like most "hopes", his hope was deceitful. Gold Mountain wasn't the place for a Chinese farmer who didn't know a word of English. He spent his life working 12 hour shifts in a greasy Chinese Restaurant, in order to support his wife and his three beautiful energetic kids. He dealt with Chinese woks that sizzled with anger when the White Ghost requested order after order of Kung Pow Beef or Orange Chicken. He was lonely in the land of ghosts; no aunties, no mama or baba, no brothers, no one. Like a poison, time slowly seeped through his veins. The revelation of his hopes cannot be his reality corroded his brain cells. As neurons after neurons are dispatched, he passes his hopes to his kids-longing that it becomes reality.

You make it incredibly hard to love you.

Is it dementia or just seeking attention?

Either way, it's difficult to put up with You.

You make us feel ungrateful.

Love,
Your Kids

Family

I haven't seen my family for almost two weeks and I miss them. Usually I don't "miss" my family just because I like the freedom I never had a few years back. Yet I feel so thankful that I get to spend time with them almost every week because there are other people out there who don't get to see their families for months, years, or ever!

I remember when I was about 8 years old, I was hanging in the kitchen watching my dad eat his breakfast and my mom cleaning the dishes. My mom randomly tells me,
"We're getting old".

Right then and there, I felt the lump in my throat, my lips puckered, and tears started streaming down my face. Silly right? At the time, yes. Just last Friday, my father calls me on the phone, "How are you doing? Did you eat dinner? Wear a sweater, it's cold! Focus on school so you can take care of me."-the usual. Then he calls me an hour later and tells me the same exact thing. I don't know whether you're comprehending this, but old age is creeping right behind my dad and it's not treating him well. There has been signs of him being forgetful, but I just can't seem to accept the fact that he's aging. I do that because as a child, we grow up believing that our parents are invincible, and is always there to help and support you.

I'm 20 years old, and it's immature to think that way, but the point is:

Spend quality time with your family before it's too late. I admit it, I've taken them for granted. At this point in my life: my siblings are getting married, I'm out by myself in college, parents are retired. Give it a few more years and soon enough everyone is going to have their own lives to tend to. And it would be so much harder to even have dinner together as a family. Even worse, your parents may not ever be there to make it for dinner.

I hate to post up such a depressing post. I don't usually post anything personal about myself, but I feel that I needed to say this. Now go on, make some new memories with your family.

My rents when they first married in Guang Zhou China.

My parents a year ago.

My brother and my new sister in law.

My sister and her fiance.

It's funny how we want to become older when we were young. Now that I'm older, I want to go back to the days when everyone lived under one roof.

Camera Phone: 3 Weeks of School Left

Made a bomb dinner tonight! Italian breaded chicken smothered in marinara sauce, mash potatoes, with garlic buttered asparagus. Very easy to make.

Beautiful day on campus.

Free FRYday at Jack in the Box! My roommates and I walked to Reseda in our pajamas at 10 pm and got free fries. Plus we lied down on the middle of a street to recreate a Notebook scene. What a great night.

Baking Ganesha in my oven for my illustration class project.

Ran into hatchbang Omar on campus.

Ashlee enjoyed her sandwich from Galco's. I enjoyed my Rose petal soda, yum.

Classy Tattoos

Honestly, people get some stupid tattoos these days. If you're ever considering getting one of these: significant others name, tramp stamp, stupid butterfly, fairies, someone's face at a amateur shop,or Chinese characters. Please reconsider!

Instead, get one of these! Amazing work done by Amanda Wachob. What I love about her tattoos is that they don't look like the typical heavy and harsh outlined tattoos. Wachobs work is much more elegant and far less gaudy. I feel like I'm looking at watercolor painting. It's amazing how she mimics that medium.

CHAKA!

I can't believe the guy from "Jizz In My Pants" music video was Chaka (Jorma Toccone) from Land of the Lost.

He's so creepy!

Love her voice, her fashion sense, her funk, & her James Brown dance moves.

Daily Drawings #1

For my printmaking class, I am suppose to draw something everyday on these 4x6in papers. From now on, till May (when class ends), I'm going post some of my favorite drawings. So here's:

#59 Hindu God Ganesh
According to Wikipedia, Ganesh is the Lord of Beginnings & The Remover of Obstacles. I'm becoming an indianphile, they have beautiful woman (but ugly men), great fashion, great colors, ancient traditions, and I bet great food. I would love to visit and absorb the local color.

The First Day of Spring Break

Hurray! Spring break is finally here. Now I have some time to read some books. As of right now, I'm reading Snowflower and the Secret fan. I think I'm becoming a fan of Lisa See's book. I love books that have a lot of imagery and people suffering. Plus, I'm learning a lot about my heritage. After this I'm SO going to snuggle in bed and read :]

NO!! I RAN OUT OF PRETZELS!! CURSES!!1

I think this year's Spring break is going to be very productive, rather than lying in bed and feeling the hair grow out of my head like usual. Nope, I'm going to be up and about! Let's see what's in store for me.
  • Be a hostess for Fancy Dad's Association. All I have to do is look cute in a cheong sam and say hi to people.
  • Moritz is in LA from Germany! I can't wait to see him!
  • Go to ELAC to get my transcripts, with a little shopping on the side.
  • Do research and explore Chinatown for my Los Angeles geography paper.
  • Read for pleasure.
  • Go to the La Brea Tarpits
  • Hangout with Family
Here are some random pictures from my cellphone.

Weird looking cloud at the parking lot of Wal-Mart.

March 4(for) Education. Clever huh? Mellie taught me that.
